New Refrigerant

The mobile A/C industry has been working on a long-term replacement for R-134a that is not a greenhouse gas (GHG), meaning it will not contribute to global warming.

At this time, after years of development and testing, it looks like the industry has successfully completed work on an all-new automotive refrigerant compound to be called R-1234yf. In 2009, it was declared “exposure-safe” and passed government-required toxicology tests for use in mobile A/C systems. It was also subjected to exhaustive flammability tests that concluded its ignition potential was extraordinarily remote and therefore is predicted to pass government scrutiny for safe use in automotive passenger cabins.

However, EPA has recently proposed to ban DIY use of the new refrigerant (see Threats) despite the fact that it appears that the new refrigerant is a safe substitute for R-134a and R-12 with nearly no global warming potential.
